Olympic Truce Resolution for Milano Cortina 2026 adopted by the United Nations

Global call for peace receives overwhelming support as IOC urges nations to protect athletes and the spirit of the Games

Olympic Truce Resolution for Milano Cortina 2026 adopted by the United Nations

The Olympic Truce — one of sport’s most symbolic traditions — received renewed global backing as the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the resolution for the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The resolution, passed by consensus at the 80th UNGA Session in New York, calls on nations to uphold peace and guarantee safe passage for athletes and officials during the Games.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry and Milano Cortina 2026 Organising Committee President Giovanni Malagò addressed the Assembly, underscoring how the Truce remains a rare reminder of unity in an increasingly divided world.

A Historic Tradition Reaffirmed

The resolution, titled “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal,” urges all UN Member States to observe the Truce from 7 days before the Olympic Winter Games (6–22 February 2026) until 7 days after the Paralympic Games (6–15 March 2026).

Its purpose remains unchanged from ancient times: ensuring athletes can compete safely, free from conflict or political barriers.
This year, 165 Member States co-sponsored the resolution — one of the strongest endorsements in recent editions.

IOC President’s Call: Focus on What Unites Us

Addressing the UN, Kirsty Coventry delivered an emotional appeal for unity through sport.

“In such a world, sport — and the Olympic Games in particular — can offer a rare space where people meet not as adversaries, but as fellow human beings,” she said, reminding delegates that athletes embody cooperation beyond nationality or politics.

Coventry also issued a firm reminder that visas, political disputes and national policies must not deny athletes their right to compete.
“Competitors must be selected by International Federations, not governments,” she stressed.

She thanked Member States for their overwhelming support, saying, “You are sending a clear message to the athletes of the world: you will stand with them.”

Milano Cortina’s Message: Harmony

Introducing the resolution on behalf of Italy, Malagò highlighted the 2026 Games’ core theme: Armonia — Harmony.
He connected it to Italy’s cultural heritage, invoking Renaissance thinkers who placed human dignity, reason and beauty at the heart of social progress.

“This is our unique opportunity to promote an atmosphere of peace,” he said, calling Milano Cortina 2026 a unifying moment for global sport.

Key Features of the 2026 Truce Resolution

The text emphasises several priorities:

  • Ensuring safe passage and participation for all accredited athletes and officials

  • Strengthening cooperation among nations in upholding Olympic values

  • Recognising the leadership of the IOC, IPC and Olympic Truce Centre

  • Commending athletes for their role in promoting peace and human understanding

  • Welcoming progress toward gender equality, noting Milano Cortina 2026 will be the most gender-balanced Winter Games in history

  • Encouraging active local community engagement in the hosting process

The resolution also reaffirms sport as a tool for peace, dialogue, tolerance and reconciliation.

Ancient Roots, Modern Purpose

The Truce dates back to the Greek concept of “Ekecheiria,” a period during which feuding city-states paused conflict so athletes and spectators could travel safely to Olympia.
Revived by the IOC in the 1990s, the modern Truce extends that ancient promise — that sport should transcend politics, violence and division.

Conclusion

In a world marked by conflict and uncertainty, the adoption of the Olympic Truce for Milano Cortina 2026 stands as a rare, collective commitment to peace.
With both the UN and IOC aligned, the message ahead of the Winter Games is clear:
protect the athletes, protect the spirit of sport, and let the Olympic flame shine as a beacon of unity.
