Shafali Verma’s Stunning Comeback Seals World Cup Glory for India

A comeback on the biggest stage is never easy—but for Shafali Verma, it turned into a fairy-tale performance. Called into the Indian squad only after opener Pratika Rawal was ruled out of the World Cup, Verma’s inclusion initially raised eyebrows. Yet, glimpses of her refined technique in the nets hinted at a player ready to seize the moment.

South Africa, aware of her tendency to swing across the line, set a clever trap with fielders positioned across the off-side ring and mid-on up. But the opening bowlers, Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka, bowled full outside off-stump, unknowingly playing into Verma’s preparation. With poise and precision, the 21-year-old drove the ball crisply, piercing the gaps in the off-side field and putting India on the front foot.

With partner Smriti Mandhana finding little room early on, Verma’s aggression became India’s anchor. Even when South Africa adjusted by shortening the length to push her onto the back foot, she remained unfazed, punishing loose deliveries and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

In a match that will be remembered for years, Verma scored a brilliant 87, helping India post 298/7, and then chipped in with crucial wickets to restrict the Proteas to 246 at a raucous DY Patil Stadium. From a player who was barely in the reserves until last week to Player of the Final, Verma’s all-round heroics not only secured the trophy but also left fans in awe of her composure, skill, and determination.

“This was about trusting my game and playing freely,” Verma said later, crediting her family, teammates, and even her idol Sachin Tendulkar for inspiration. In a World Cup filled with drama, Shafali Verma’s comeback was the story that stole the show.
