India’s win for the ages could redefine women’s cricket

When Jemimah Rodrigues was trying to make it to the Indian women’s team as a teenager, she cut out her face and stuck it over an image of the national jersey for motivation. On Thursday night at DY Patil Stadium, she lived that dream in grand style, playing one of the greatest ODI innings to take India to a World Cup final after a stunning chase against defending champions Australia.

Rodrigues rises under pressure
Dropped just 11 days ago for a group match against England, Rodrigues showed remarkable composure under immense pressure. Her unbeaten 127 helped India chase 339 — the highest in women’s ODI history. Every run was cheered by the packed Navi Mumbai crowd as history unfolded. Overcome with emotion, she broke down after Amanjot Kaur hit the winning boundary. Rodrigues later admitted that she had cried almost every day during the World Cup due to anxiety. Known for her cheerful nature, she displayed rare grit and determination — transforming from a star to a potential legend.

India-Australia rivalry reaches new heights
Australia seemed set for victory after Phoebe Litchfield’s 119 guided them to 338. But Rodrigues’ class, placement, and running between the wickets turned the game around. Even the usually composed Australians faltered, dropping easy catches and watching India chase the impossible. The innings will go down as one of the finest in women’s cricket history.

A new dawn for women’s cricket in India
India now face South Africa in the final, ensuring a new champion after 25 years. Beyond the numbers, this win could redefine the women’s game in India. With the rise of the Women’s Premier League and growing fan support, a home World Cup triumph could trigger a massive commercial and cultural transformation for women’s cricket.
