Sri Lanka cricket team opener Pathum Nissanka etched his name in T20I history books. He is now the 3rd player in Men’s T20 Asia Cup history to register a hundred.

The dashing multi-format batter hit a sublime hundred in the Men’s T20 Asia Cup Super 4 clash against India on Saturday, September 27 in Dubai. Nissanka ended up scoring 107 runs from 58 balls with the help of 7 fours and 6 sixes.

He almost pulled off the chase, but India held their nerves to force a tie. Both teams ended up with 220/5. Thereafter, a Super Over was in play to dictate the outcome. India won the same, needing three runs to win.

Nissanka brought his A game into play. He became Sri Lanka’s 4th centurion in T20Is. He also ended up adding a record 127-run stand alongside Kusal Perera. This became Sri Lanka’s maiden century-plus stand against India in T20Is.

Nissanka becomes 3rd player with a ton in T20 Asia Cup

Nissanka made a strong impact for the Lankans. He started well despite his side losing Kusal Mendis (7/1). In the first six overs, Sri Lanka got to 72/1. Alongside Perera, Nissanka forged a telling partnership as the two dictated the show in a 203-run chase.

Nissanka, who got to a fifty off 25 balls, played his range of shots and kept the scorecard moving. Perera also made an impact, scoring a neat 58 from 32 balls. He went past 5000 runs in T20s during this knock. India hit back with a couple of wickets once Perera departed and came back into the contest.

Nissanka got to his ton in the 17th over with a four. However, his dismissal in the final over was a blow. Dasun Shanaka tried his best and forced a tie.

Nissanka joins Babar Hayat and Virat Kohli

With a score of 107, Nissanka became the 3rd batter across the three editions of the Men’s T20 Asia Cup to slam a hundred.

He joined Hong Kong’s Babar Hayat, who hit a commanding 122 versus Oman in the 2016 edition. The match was a qualifier group game. The match in Fatullah saw Oman hit 180/5. In response, Hayat’s century wasn’t enough as Hong Kong lost by 5 runs.

Virat Kohli, who retired from T20Is in 2024, became the 2nd batter with a ton in the T20 Asia Cup. He achieved the feat for India against Afghanistan in the 2022 edition. The Super 4 contest of the tournament saw Kohli smash 122* from 61 balls. India scored 212/2 before restricting the Afghans to 111/8.
