KIGALI, RWANDA — Three-time world champion Marianne Vos has withdrawn from the upcoming UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda to be with her sick father, Netherlands coach Laurens ten Dam announced. The unexpected departure of one of cycling’s greatest riders is a significant blow to the Dutch team, which was counting on her vast experience.

A Difficult Personal Decision

Netherlands coach Laurens ten Dam told Dutch NOS television that the decision was made after a difficult week for Vos. “Her father had surgery last week and was in the hospital,” ten Dam explained. “He’s doing well under the circumstances, but it’s been a very tense and hectic few days for Marianne. I called her, and we both decided she’s staying home.” The move highlights the personal circumstances that can impact even the most decorated athletes.

The Legacy of a Legend

At 38, Vos has long been a fixture at the World Championships. Her absence marks a rare moment for the Dutch team. She has competed in the women’s road race 16 times, winning gold in 2006, 2012, and 2013. In addition to her three world titles, Vos has been a runner-up an impressive six times, cementing her reputation as one of the most consistent performers in the sport’s history. Her vast experience and tactical prowess will be sorely missed on the difficult circuits of Kigali.

Rising Star Steps In

In Vos’s place, the Netherlands has called up Femke de Vries, who has been in top form recently, including a second-place finish in the Tour de l’Ardeche. While de Vries brings her own momentum to the team, ten Dam was quick to temper expectations. “Marianne Vos isn’t necessarily replaceable,” he said. “So I don’t want Femke to step into those shoes. I don’t want to put that pressure on her. But we do have a very strong new rider.” De Vries will now join a formidable Dutch squad hoping to bring home a medal despite the loss of one of its leaders.
