World Athletics Championships 2025: Emmanuel Wanyonyi Cruises into Semis, Keeps Fans Guessing

PC- Olympics.com

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi comfortably advanced to the men’s 800m semifinals at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 1:45.05 in his opening heat. The Kenyan star looked in control as Italy’s Francesco Pernici (1:45.11) and Ireland’s Mark English (1:45.13) followed him across the line.

“I Was Just Testing Myself”

Speaking after his win, the reigning world silver medallist said he had treated the heats as an opportunity to gauge his form. “I thank God for enabling me to run well, and I was just testing myself… Now I know how my body is. I need to be very keen in the semis so I can make it to the final,” Wanyonyi remarked.

The 20-year-old, fresh from winning the Diamond League final in Zurich, admitted he has not trained extensively since that triumph. He plans to discuss his performance with his coach to fine-tune his strategy for the semifinals.

Diamond League vs. World Stage

Wanyonyi highlighted the contrast between the Diamond League circuit and the World Championships. “The Diamond League is very different from the World Championships because here it’s all about winning, not times. Each race gives you new lessons,” he explained.

Eyeing the Final

Placed in the third semifinal heat, Wanyonyi will line up against Jamaica’s Navasky Anderson, American Bryce Hoppel, and Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela. Despite challenging weather conditions, he remains confident of progressing.

This is Wanyonyi’s third World Championships appearance. After finishing fourth in Eugene (2022) and winning silver in Budapest (2023), he now has his eyes firmly set on the top of the podium.
