Hamilton Tops Ferrari Double for Monza FP1

Bhubaneswar : Lewis Hamilton ignited Monza’s iconic Italian Grand Prix weekend with a dazzling performance, leading a dominant Ferrari one-two in the opening practice session. Clocking an impressive lap time of 1:20.117, Hamilton narrowly outpaced his teammate Charles Leclerc, who trailed by just 0.169 seconds. This strong showing marked a thrilling homecoming for Ferrari and a much-needed boost after their disappointing double retirement at the Dutch Grand Prix last week. The thunderous cheers of the Tifosi in Monza echoed Hamilton’s sparkling debut for Scuderia Ferrari at their home turf.

  • Hamilton sets the fastest lap: 1:20.117
  • Leclerc’s close pursuit: just 0.169 seconds behind
  • Ferrari bounces back from recent setbacks

Despite the promising pace, Hamilton faces a five-place grid penalty carried forward from the Zandvoort race. Nevertheless, the British driver’s performance radiated confidence and optimism. Sky Sports expert Karun Chandhok commented, “He needs to enjoy these moments… It’s a good start to the weekend.” Hamilton himself seemed upbeat, aware that this practice momentum could translate into Sunday’s challenge.

  • Hamilton’s five-place grid penalty remains
  • Positive morale boost despite the penalty

Carlos Sainz, now racing for Williams, turned heads by securing third place in the session, followed closely by Max Verstappen for Red Bull in fourth. Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli displayed solid pace to finish fifth. Notably, McLaren’s Lando Norris, typically strong on Monza’s high speeds, had a tougher session, struggling particularly in the high-speed Lesmos and finishing sixth. Championship leader Oscar Piastri opted out of the first session, allowing McLaren junior Alex Dunne valuable track time.

  • Sainz impresses with third place for Williams
  • Verstappen fourth, Antonelli fifth for Mercedes
  • Norris struggles, Piastri sits out FP1

As the teams pushed further in the second practice, Lando Norris bounced back by topping the timesheets, closely followed by Leclerc and Sainz, signaling that Monza’s race weekend pace battle remains fierce.

This opening practice session highlighted Ferrari’s regained competitive edge and Hamilton’s rapid adaptation to Ferrari machinery under Monza’s intense spotlight. With grid penalties and championship stakes looming, all eyes are now on how the battle for bragging rights unfolds in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.

  • Ferrari’s strong one-two positions them as favorites
  • Hamilton’s speed and composure shine despite grid penalty
  • Intense competition expected ahead at Monza

The 2025 Italian GP at Monza is shaping up to deliver the classic high-speed, high-drama racing fans crave, with Lewis Hamilton leading the charge for Ferrari’s home glory.
