Masters, British Open Announce Major Golf Rule Changes

Augusta, USA & St. Andrews, Scotland – In a significant move to broaden the international scope of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, Augusta National Golf Club and The R&A have jointly announced new qualification pathways into the Masters and British Open. The changes will immediately offer direct invitations to winners of select national open championships around the world.

The initiative, which aims to strengthen the global representation in both majors, builds upon The R&A’s existing Open Qualifying Series that has been in place since 2013.

New Masters Qualification Rules (2026)

For the 2026 Masters to be held next April, new qualification criteria have been established to provide more opportunities for international players.

  • National Open Winners: Invitations will now be extended to the winners of several historic national opens, including the Scottish Open, Spanish Open, Japan Open, Hong Kong Open, Australian Open, and South African Open.
  • PGA Tour Winners: Augusta National has also updated its criteria for PGA Tour winners. Masters invitations will now be limited to individual winners of events that award a full-point allocation for the season-ending Tour Championship. This means that, unlike in previous years, winners of the PGA Tour’s fall events will no longer receive a direct exemption into the Masters.

New British Open Qualification Rules (2026)

The R&A has also expanded its qualifying series for the 2026 British Open at Royal Birkdale in July. The new system will allow players to qualify through 15 events across 13 countries. The full schedule for The Open Qualifying Series and the complete list of exemptions will be formally announced in September.

This joint move by golf’s two most prestigious bodies is seen as a way to acknowledge the “global strength of elite professional golf,” as stated by Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A. Darbon emphasized that the initiative creates an “outstanding opportunity for players in all parts of the world to qualify” for a major championship.
