Khalid Jamil Confident As India Gear Up For CAFA Nations Cup

New Delhi:

Newly appointed India head coach Khalid Jamil exuded calm and confidence as he named his 23-member squad for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup, despite facing challenges with key absentees and limited preparation time. The tournament in Hisor, Tajikistan, will mark Jamil’s first assignment since taking charge.

Missing Big Names But Staying Positive

India will be without seven Mohun Bagan Super Giant players, unavailable due to AFC Champions League 2 commitments. Yet, Jamil brushed aside concerns, insisting the squad is motivated and focused. “We’ve not missed them. The boys are ready, and they know their responsibility once they step on the pitch,” the coach said.

Tough Fixtures Seen As Opportunity

The Blue Tigers face a challenging group—opening against Tajikistan on August 29, before taking on Iran on September 1 and Afghanistan on September 4. With Iran and Tajikistan ranked higher by FIFA, Jamil called the fixtures a valuable test. “It’s good for us to play stronger teams. This will show us where we stand and what needs improvement ahead of the Asian Cup qualifiers,” he remarked.

Squad Selection Balances Experience And Youth

The coach opted for a blend of experience and emerging talent. Veteran goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and defender Sandesh Jhingan lead the squad, while promising names like Hrithik Tiwari and Jithin MS bring fresh energy. Injuries sidelined Akash Mishra, Rahim Ali, and Rahul KP, while striker Sunil Chhetri has been rested, with an eye on the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.

Federation Backs Jamil’s Appointment

All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey expressed full faith in Jamil, praising his track record in Indian football. “I am sure he will prove his merit for India like he has with clubs,” Chaubey said. At 48, Jamil remains the only Indian coach to have guided multiple teams—NorthEast United and Jamshedpur FC—to the Indian Super League semi-finals, while also leading Jamshedpur to the Super Cup final last season.

Eyes On The Future

While the CAFA Nations Cup will be Jamil’s baptism by fire, the coach remains unfazed. His focus is on instilling belief and extracting the best from a squad in transition. “Every game is an opportunity to improve. The attitude of the players gives me confidence,” Jamil concluded
