Flavio Cobolli’s remarkable rise in men’s tennis gathered more momentum on Monday as the Italian outplayed fifth seed Alex de Minaur in straight sets to book his place in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2026. Producing an assured display from start to finish, Cobolli claimed a 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 victory, proving once again that he belongs among the sport’s elite on the biggest stage.

The victory marks Cobolli’s second consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance and continues what has already been a breakthrough season for the 24-year-old. Having impressed throughout the year with consistent performances at the highest level, the Italian now finds himself just three wins away from lifting his maiden Grand Slam title.

Match Score

Flavio Cobolli defeated Alex de Minaur (5)

7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3

Cobolli Delivers Under Pressure

The opening set remained closely contested, with both players protecting their serves for most of the set. However, Cobolli showed excellent composure late on, breaking De Minaur’s serve at a crucial moment before serving out the set 7-5.

The second set turned into the defining phase of the contest. De Minaur looked set to level the match after opening a 5-2 advantage, but Cobolli refused to surrender. Displaying remarkable resilience, he clawed his way back into the contest, forcing a tiebreak before winning it 7-4 with aggressive baseline play and confident shot selection.

Having taken a two-set lead, Cobolli never allowed the Australian back into the match. He dictated the rallies throughout the third set, earned another crucial break of serve and comfortably closed out the match 6-3.

Turning Point

The comeback from 2-5 down in the second set proved to be the decisive moment. Instead of allowing De Minaur to shift the momentum, Cobolli raised his level dramatically, attacking with precision while maintaining excellent consistency from the baseline.

His ability to remain calm under pressure highlighted the growing maturity in his game and demonstrated why he is emerging as one of the ATP Tour’s brightest young contenders.

Match Played in Challenging Conditions

The encounter was also affected by soaring temperatures at the All England Club. Play was briefly interrupted on more than one occasion after spectators required medical assistance due to the heat. Despite the stoppages, Cobolli maintained his concentration and never allowed the interruptions to disrupt his rhythm.

What Lies Ahead

Cobolli now advances to the Wimbledon quarterfinals carrying tremendous confidence after eliminating one of the tournament’s highest seeds. His aggressive all-court game and improving mental strength have made him one of the most dangerous players left in the draw.

For De Minaur, the defeat brings another disappointing end to his Wimbledon campaign as his search for a maiden semifinal appearance at the All England Club continues.
