Alexander Zverev’s quest for a breakthrough Wimbledon campaign gathered pace as the German second seed defeated American Marcos Giron in straight sets to book his place in the fourth round of the Championships. Riding high on confidence after capturing his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open, Zverev produced another polished display to prevail 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-4 on Court One.
The 29-year-old dominated the opening set with his powerful serve and aggressive baseline game before Giron offered a much sterner challenge in the second. Zverev held his nerve in the tie-break and then weathered a late fightback in the third set to complete the victory in just over two hours.
Traditionally regarded as his least successful Grand Slam, Wimbledon is beginning to look increasingly promising for Zverev. Having reached the fourth round for the fourth time, the German now stands just one victory away from achieving a career-first quarter-final appearance at the All England Club.
Zverev credited his growing comfort on grass to improved movement and the confidence gained from his recent success in Paris. The dry conditions have also suited his booming serve, allowing him to dictate points and keep opponents under constant pressure.
Awaiting him in the last 16 is Czech 13th seed Jiří Lehečka, who also impressed in his third-round victory. With his confidence soaring and momentum firmly behind him, Zverev will be aiming to extend his run and edge closer to a maiden Wimbledon semi-final berth.
