From 50,000 to 20 Million: How Cape Verde’s 40-Year-Old Hero Vozinha Became the World Cup’s Biggest Surprise

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha celebrates after another heroic save during the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the 40-year-old became one of the tournament's biggest breakout stars.

Viral Overnight: The Goalkeeper Who Took Social Media by Storm

Just weeks ago, Vozinha was known to only a small group of football fans, with around 50,000 Instagram followers. Today, the Cape Verde goalkeeper is one of the biggest breakout stars of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with his social media following soaring beyond 20 million after a series of breathtaking performances that captivated football lovers across the globe.

The staggering rise has made the 40-year-old one of the tournament’s biggest off-field success stories, attracting global brands, sponsorship opportunities and admiration from fans far beyond Cape Verde’s shores. Marketing experts estimate his World Cup exploits have already generated millions of dollars in media value, underlining the commercial power of an unforgettable sporting story.

Defying Age on Football’s Biggest Stage

At an age when most professional footballers have long retired, Vozinha delivered the performances of his career on the world’s biggest stage.

The veteran goalkeeper, whose real name is Josimar José Évora Dias, became Cape Verde’s last line of defence during the nation’s maiden World Cup appearance. His reflexes, composure and leadership repeatedly frustrated some of football’s biggest stars, proving that experience can be just as valuable as youth.

Far from slowing down, the veteran inspired a team making history and became a symbol of perseverance for athletes around the world.

The Spain Performance That Changed Everything

Vozinha’s rise to global fame began with an extraordinary display against Spain in Cape Verde’s opening World Cup match.

Facing a star-studded Spanish side, the goalkeeper produced seven outstanding saves to earn a memorable goalless draw and the Man of the Match award. He denied several clear-cut chances and frustrated one of the tournament favourites, instantly becoming one of the most talked-about players in football.

Within hours, highlight reels flooded social media and millions of new fans discovered the veteran goalkeeper from the tiny Atlantic island nation.

Standing Tall Against Football’s Giants

The Spain match was only the beginning.

Vozinha continued to produce heroic displays throughout the tournament as Cape Verde held Uruguay and Saudi Arabia before reaching the knockout stage in their World Cup debut. Even against defending champions Argentina, he made a string of outstanding saves to keep Lionel Messi and company at bay, helping push the eventual winners to extra time before Cape Verde narrowly lost 3-2.

His fearless goalkeeping became the foundation of one of the most remarkable underdog stories in recent World Cup history.

A Legacy Bigger Than Football

Although Cape Verde’s dream run ended in the Round of 32, the team returned home as national heroes.

For Vozinha, the tournament has changed life forever. From relative obscurity to global recognition, the veteran has become an inspiration for aspiring footballers and proof that dreams have no age limit. His story has also placed Cape Verde firmly on the global football map, ensuring the nation’s historic World Cup campaign will be remembered long after the final whistle.
