From Wellness to World Sport: How the Inaugural Yogasana World Championships Changed Perceptions

A first-hand experience in Ahmedabad showcased Yogasana as a demanding competitive sport while highlighting its growing global ambitions despite organisational challenges.

The inaugural World Yogasana Championships in Ahmedabad offered more than just a medal race—it provided a glimpse into the future of Yogasana as an international competitive sport. For many spectators and first-time visitors, the event transformed the common perception of yoga from a daily wellness practice into a discipline that demands exceptional strength, balance, flexibility and precision.

Athletes from 79 countries gathered at the EKA Arena to compete across multiple age categories, making it one of the biggest global Yogasana events ever held. The championship featured 522 participants, with competitors judged on the technical execution of postures, stability, control and artistic presentation through a structured scoring system.

India dominated the competition on home soil, finishing at the top of the medal standings with an incredible haul of 114 medals, including 102 gold medals. Japan secured second place with 3 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals, while Argentina finished third thanks to an outstanding individual performance by its lone athlete.

More Than Just Medals

While India’s dominance grabbed headlines, the biggest takeaway from the championship was the sport itself. Many visitors who initially viewed yoga purely as a health practice left impressed by the athleticism displayed by competitors. The championship demonstrated that Yogasana requires years of dedicated training, remarkable body control and immense mental focus.

The event also highlighted the growing international interest in Yogasana, with athletes from different cultures coming together to compete while promoting the values of discipline, respect and healthy living.

Areas That Need Improvement

Despite the successful conduct of the inaugural edition, the championship also exposed several organisational shortcomings. Delays in the competition schedule, overcrowding at certain facilities, transportation issues within the venue and hygiene-related concerns affected the overall experience for some athletes and visitors.

As India continues its efforts to establish Yogasana as a recognised global sport and strengthen its bid for Olympic inclusion, improving event management and infrastructure will be equally important.

A New Chapter for Yogasana

The championship represented a significant milestone in India’s mission to transform its ancient tradition into a modern competitive sport. With increasing international participation and structured competition formats, Yogasana appears to be steadily moving towards wider global recognition.

Beyond the medal tally, the event proved that Yogasana has the potential to inspire a new generation of athletes while preserving the philosophy and discipline that have defined yoga for centuries.

Medal Highlights

Champion: India – 114 medals (102 Gold)

Runner-up: Japan – 3 Gold, 3 Silver, 5 Bronze

Third Place: Argentina

Participating Nations: 79

Total Athletes: 522

Countries Winning Medals: 31

The inaugural World Yogasana Championships may have crowned its first world champions, but more importantly, it marked the beginning of Yogasana’s journey towards becoming a globally recognised sporting discipline.
