Teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received his maiden India call-up after being named in the T20 squad for the upcoming tour of Ireland and England.
The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals star is now on the verge of creating history. If selected in the playing XI, Sooryavanshi will become the youngest male cricketer ever to represent India, surpassing the record held by legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at 16 years and 205 days against Pakistan in 1989.
Extraordinary IPL Season Forces Selectors To Act
Sooryavanshi’s selection comes after a remarkable Indian Premier League campaign that established him as one of the brightest talents in world cricket.
The left-handed batter amassed 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.30 for Rajasthan Royals. His performances earned him the Most Valuable Player award, the Emerging Player award and the Orange Cap for finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer.
He also smashed a record 72 sixes during the season, surpassing Chris Gayle’s long-standing IPL record of 59 sixes set in 2012.
Under-19 Hero Continues Rapid Rise
The youngster had already announced himself on the international junior stage earlier this year.
In February, he played a match-winning knock of 175 as India defeated England in the Under-19 World Cup final, further strengthening his reputation as a future star.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Sooryavanshi had earned his opportunity through consistent performances under pressure.
“He has shown he can change games and perform in one of the toughest T20 competitions in the world. He picked himself through his performances,” Agarkar explained.
Vaughan Labels Teenager World’s Best T20 Batter
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was among the biggest admirers of Sooryavanshi’s IPL exploits.
Vaughan described the teenager as a once-in-a-generation talent and even claimed he is currently the best T20 batter in world cricket.
The Englishman highlighted Sooryavanshi’s ability to attack elite bowlers from the very first delivery, including stars such as Jasprit Bumrah, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.
His fearless approach has already sparked discussions among experts about how opposition teams can contain him.
Major Changes In India’s T20 Setup
The squad announcement also brought significant changes to India’s leadership group.
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav despite India’s recent T20 World Cup triumph.
Selectors decided to move in a new direction after reassessing the team’s long-term plans following the global tournament.
Fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have been rested, while uncapped pacer Prince Yadav has earned his first national call-up.

England And Ireland Tour Awaits
India will begin the tour with two T20 internationals in Ireland before travelling to England for a five-match T20 series in July.
All eyes will now be on Sooryavanshi, whose extraordinary rise from Under-19 cricket to the national team has been one of the biggest stories in world cricket this year. If selected, the teenager could soon add another historic milestone to his rapidly growing list of achievements.
