South Africa Face World Cup Travel Chaos After Visa Mix-Up Delays Team’s Journey

South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been thrown into uncertainty after reports emerged that visa issues delayed the national team’s departure to Mexico.

According to South African broadcaster SABC, an administrative error resulted in several players not receiving the required visas on time. The incident has sparked strong criticism from Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, who demanded an immediate explanation from the South African Football Association.

“I need a report and action must be taken against those responsible for this mess,” McKenzie wrote on social media. “We are being made to look like fools.”

Minister Calls Situation Embarrassing

McKenzie described the situation as unfair to both players and coaching staff, especially with the World Cup just days away.

Reports from TimesLive suggested efforts were underway to secure United States visas for the squad, allowing them to travel either later on Sunday or Monday.

The visa issue is particularly important because South Africa will not only play in Mexico but will also travel to the United States during the tournament.

Friendly Against Jamaica Under Threat

South Africa are scheduled to face Jamaica in a World Cup warm-up match in Mexico on Friday. The fixture is expected to be their final preparation before the tournament begins.

Bafana Bafana will kick off their World Cup campaign against co-hosts Mexico on 11 June. Their second group-stage match will be against the Czech Republic in Atlanta, United States.

Winless Run Adds To Concerns

The travel disruption comes at a difficult time for South Africa, who are currently on a four-match winless streak.

Their most recent outing ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw against Nicaragua, a match in which Bafana Bafana also missed a penalty.

South Africa are one of 10 African nations participating in the expanded 48-team World Cup and will be hoping to make a strong impression at their first appearance in the tournament since hosting the competition in 2010.
