The Indian U-20 men’s football team has been drawn alongside Uzbekistan, Syria and Bangladesh in Group B of the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers following the official draw conducted at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
India will play their qualification matches in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, between August 25 and September 6 in a centralized single round-robin format, with Uzbekistan hosting the group.
The qualifiers will feature a revamped format introduced by the Asian Football Confederation earlier this year. A total of 32 teams have been divided into eight groups of four teams each. The eight group winners and the seven best second-placed teams will qualify for the final tournament in China.
India face a challenging path with Uzbekistan considered one of Asia’s strongest youth football nations, while Syria have consistently remained competitive at youth level. Bangladesh complete the four-team group, setting up a South Asian rivalry clash in the qualifiers.
The Blue Colts will aim to secure qualification for the AFC U20 Asian Cup finals for the first time since 2006, when India hosted the tournament. India’s best-ever performance in the competition came in 1974 when they finished joint champions alongside Iran.
As part of the new competition structure, the bottom-ranked teams from the qualification phase could face relegation to the development phase for the next edition, adding further importance to every match.
