The traditional idea of sports fandom ending with the final whistle is rapidly fading in India. According to Google India, a new generation of digitally active “superfans” is transforming the sports marketing landscape by staying connected to cricket and other sports around the clock through online platforms, especially YouTube.
Google India revealed that nearly 96 per cent of Indian cricket viewers are present on YouTube, making the platform a major destination for sports engagement beyond live broadcasts. Fans are now consuming everything from player analysis and match breakdowns to behind-the-scenes content, memes and creator-led commentary long after games end.
The rise of “Crictubers” — cricket-focused content creators — has further changed how audiences interact with the sport. These creators are increasingly acting like independent digital media houses, building loyal fan communities through authentic and regional content. Google noted that viewers can quickly identify forced brand endorsements, making trust and relatability essential for advertisers.
Brands are now shifting strategies from short-term match advertising to continuous digital engagement. Google said 71 per cent of Gen Z sports fans in India have made purchases after watching sports-related advertisements online, underlining the commercial power of creator-led sports content.
Regional language content is also playing a key role in expanding digital fandom. Channels using local dialects and culturally rooted humour are attracting large audiences across states, helping brands tap into highly engaged communities.
The Indian Premier League continues to dominate online interest globally. Google Trends data showed IPL-related searches worldwide surged by 80 per cent this year, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru emerged as the most searched IPL team in India, followed by Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
The growing digital obsession around cricket has also influenced shopping behaviour, with fans increasingly searching for IPL jerseys, cricket gear and same-day delivery options for sports merchandise.
