Enric Mas Quietly Builds Giro d’Italia Challenge With Calm and Consistent Start

Enric Mas may not have grabbed the headlines during the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia, but the Spanish climber has quietly emerged as one of the most consistent riders in the race’s early phase.

While crashes, illness and time losses disrupted several major contenders, the Movistar Team leader successfully stayed out of trouble and remained firmly in the hunt for the general classification battle. (cyclingnews.com)

Mas entered the Giro without the same level of attention surrounding riders like Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso, but his steady approach has already started attracting praise inside the peloton.

Staying Safe Becomes Early Priority

The opening stages of the Giro proved extremely challenging for general classification riders, with crashes, difficult road conditions and illness affecting several teams.

Mas and Movistar focused heavily on positioning and avoiding unnecessary risks during the chaotic opening week. Team sports director Iván Velasco praised the Spaniard’s calm approach and highlighted his ability to remain composed during stressful race situations.

The strategy has allowed Mas to conserve energy while several rivals have already faced setbacks.

Movistar insiders believe the 31-year-old’s experience and patience could become increasingly valuable as the three-week race enters the tougher mountain stages.

Slow-Burning Approach Fits Mas Perfectly

Mas has built much of his career on consistency rather than explosive performances.

The Spaniard is known for improving gradually throughout Grand Tours, often producing his strongest rides during the decisive final week. That “slow-burning” racing style appears central once again to his Giro ambitions.

Movistar believes Mas is arriving at the Giro in strong condition after a carefully planned build-up season that focused on endurance and climbing consistency.

The team also pointed to his mental resilience as one of his biggest strengths, especially during long Grand Tours where maintaining focus often becomes as important as physical form.

Searching for First Grand Tour Victory

Despite multiple podium finishes in major races, Mas is still searching for the biggest victory of his professional career.

The Spaniard has previously finished runner-up at the Vuelta a España on three occasions and has repeatedly established himself among the world’s best climbers without yet winning a Grand Tour.

The Giro d’Italia represents another major opportunity for the Movistar leader to finally challenge for an overall Grand Tour title.

His ability to limit losses during the unpredictable opening stages has strengthened belief that he could become increasingly dangerous once the race reaches the high mountains.

Movistar Building Around Stability

Movistar has entered this Giro with a balanced and disciplined approach focused heavily around protecting Mas in the general classification standings.

The team has emphasized collective support rather than aggressive early attacks, hoping to keep their leader fresh for the decisive final phases of the race.

So far, the plan has worked effectively.

Mas has remained close to the leading contenders while avoiding the crashes, illnesses and mechanical problems that have already complicated the Giro for several rivals.

His understated start may lack drama, but within the Movistar camp, confidence continues to grow quietly.

The Way Ahead

Enric Mas may not yet be leading the Giro d’Italia, but his composed and disciplined opening week has positioned him strongly for the challenges still to come.

As the race heads deeper into the mountains, the Spaniard’s patience, climbing ability and resilience could gradually transform him from an outsider into one of the Giro’s most dangerous general classification contenders.
