Tracey Neville Predicts Gracie Smith and Sophie Kelly Could Miss England Commonwealth Games Squad

Former England netball head coach Tracey Neville has suggested that emerging talents Gracie Smith and Sophie Kelly may miss out on selection for England’s 2026 Commonwealth Games squad despite enjoying standout seasons in the Netball Super League.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Off the Court podcast, Neville explained that squad selections for major tournaments are often influenced by long-term planning, existing combinations and logistical restrictions rather than just current form.

Neville highlighted that Commonwealth Games squad lists are submitted months in advance, making it difficult for late-emerging players to break into the final group. She added that injuries also complicate the process because replacement rules at the Commonwealth Games are stricter compared to other tournaments like the Netball World Cup.

Gracie Smith, who has impressed for London Pulse this season, was singled out by Neville for her exceptional rise in the midcourt role. However, the former England coach admitted competition for places remains fierce, with experienced players such as Amy Carter, Imogen Allison, Beth Givens, Jess Shaw, Nat Metcalf and Alicia Scholes already established in the national setup.

Neville stated that even though Smith has been “outstanding,” breaking into the squad at this stage would be extremely difficult because selectors tend to reward players who have already been part of the long-term full-time programme.

Sophie Kelly also faces a similar challenge despite her strong performances at domestic level. Neville pointed out that younger players who have not spent enough time within England’s elite training environment often struggle to force their way into major tournament squads close to selection deadlines.

England, currently ranked among the world’s top netball nations, are preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow following recent coaching changes after Jess Thirlby stepped down earlier this year.

While Smith and Kelly may miss out this time, Neville believes the future remains bright for England netball, praising the growing pool of talented young players emerging through the system.
