India have suffered a major setback ahead of the Thomas Cup semi-final, with Lakshya Sen ruled out due to a swollen arm injury.

The injury occurred after Sen landed heavily on his elbow during the quarter-final clash against Chou Tien-chen. The impact has caused significant swelling around his playing arm, particularly near the elbow, raising concerns over his immediate fitness. He is also dealing with painful blisters on his feet, further complicating his recovery.

Injury setback dents India hopes

Coach Vimal Kumar confirmed that the swelling in Sen’s arm is the primary reason behind his absence. He described it as a major blow, especially given Sen’s importance in India’s singles lineup.

The nature of the injury has made it difficult for Sen to generate power and control, both crucial in high-level badminton. With limited recovery time between matches, the team management decided not to risk aggravating the condition further.

Sen has been a key performer for India in recent tournaments, and his absence leaves a noticeable gap in the team’s structure. His aggressive style and ability to handle pressure situations will be missed in a crucial knockout tie.

Singles trio under pressure

With Sen unavailable, Ayush Shetty will take up the responsibility of opening the tie against world number four Christo Popov. Shetty had previously lost to Popov at the Hylo Open but has improved since and will look to deliver under pressure.

Experienced campaigner Kidambi Srikanth is set to face Alex Lanier, while HS Prannoy will take on Toma Junior Popov in the third singles. India will need at least two wins from these matches to stay in contention.

Doubles could prove decisive

If the tie goes to the final rubber, the experienced pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty could play a decisive role. The duo has been consistent performers and will be crucial if the contest reaches that stage.

France, meanwhile, come into the semi-final with strong momentum after defeating Japan in the quarter-finals, with impressive performances from the Popov brothers and Lanier.

Despite the injury setback, India will hope their remaining players can rise to the challenge and keep their Thomas Cup campaign alive.
