Manchester United are edging closer to a return to the UEFA Champions League after a remarkable turnaround under interim head coach Michael Carrick. Since taking charge in January following the departure of Ruben Amorim, Carrick has transformed the club’s fortunes, guiding the team to the top of the form table in the Premier League over his first ten matches.
United were hovering outside the European qualification places when Carrick stepped in. However, a run of impressive results has placed them firmly in contention for a Champions League spot, with only a handful of matches remaining in the season.
Tactical clarity brings stability
Carrick’s first major decision was to abandon the three-at-the-back system introduced by Amorim. Instead, he returned to a more balanced setup that has allowed key players to perform in their natural roles. Captain Bruno Fernandes has been pushed further forward in attack, while young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has been reinstated alongside experienced Brazilian Casemiro in midfield.
The approach has brought consistency. Carrick has made only a handful of changes to his starting line-ups, relying on a settled core of players. Injuries to defenders such as Lisandro Martínez and Patrick Dorgu have forced some adjustments, but the overall structure of the team has remained intact.
Calm leadership behind the scenes
Beyond tactics, Carrick’s calm personality has also played a significant role in the club’s improvement. Staff at United’s Carrington training complex have reportedly responded positively to the relaxed atmosphere he has created. Training sessions have been simplified, with the focus placed on mastering the basics rather than lengthy drills.
Former players and coaches within the setup, including Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans, have also contributed to the team’s defensive organisation.
Permanent job in sight
With United collecting 23 points from 10 games under Carrick, the club’s hierarchy are now seriously considering him for the permanent managerial role. If the team maintains its momentum and secures Champions League qualification, Carrick’s case to lead the club long-term could become impossible to ignore.
