Morocco Begin AFCON 2025 on Winning Note with 2-0 Victory Over Comoros

Hosts Morocco began the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations on a winning note, defeating Comoros 2-0 in the opening Group A match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Second-half goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi ensured a confident start for the Atlas Lions in front of a passionate home crowd.

Morocco dominated possession in the opening half but found clear chances hard to come by against a disciplined Comoros defence. The hosts were handed a golden opportunity in the 11th minute when Sofiane Rahimi failed to convert a penalty, allowing the visitors to escape an early setback. Despite sustained pressure from Walid Regragui’s men, Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor kept his side in the contest as the teams went into halftime goalless.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute when Sofyan Amrabat released Noussair Mazraoui inside the box. The defender’s low cross was met by Brahim Díaz, who finished clinically with a first-time strike to put Morocco 1-0 ahead.

Morocco sealed the victory in the 74th minute, with Ayoub El Kaabi producing a moment of magic by firing home a stunning overhead kick, leaving the Comoros defence with no answer.

Morocco controlled the closing stages with ease to claim all three points and underline their title ambitions on home soil. Fresh from winning the Arab Cup and carrying strong recent form, the Atlas Lions sent an early message to their Group A rivals.

Earlier, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was officially launched with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, where Afrobeats superstar Davido and global rap icon French Montana delivered a high-energy performance of the tournament’s official soundtrack. The celebration blended African culture, music and football, creating an electric atmosphere that thrilled fans in the stadium and viewers worldwide, setting the tone for an exciting AFCON campaign ahead.
