GOAT Tour Turns Sour: Messi’s ‘Blink-and-You-Missed-Him’ Appearance Leaves Kolkata Fans Enraged

Football legend Lionel Messi’s much-hyped return to India after 14 years was marred by scenes of chaos and fan outrage on Saturday, particularly in Kolkata, where his appearance was reportedly cut short, turning a dream event into a “scam” for thousands of paying spectators.

Messi met Shahrukh and his son Abraham in Kolkata

The “GOAT India Tour 2025” began with an electric atmosphere as Messi touched down in Kolkata. However, the morning event at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium) quickly spiralled into a massive disappointment for fans who had paid hefty amounts—some reporting ticket prices up to ₹12,000 or more—to see their idol.

The 10-Minute Turmoil
Eyewitnesses and reporters confirmed that Messi, accompanied by teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, was only on the pitch for a maximum of 10 to 20 minutes during the official tribute program.

The core of the fans’ fury centered on two main issues: Blink-and-Miss Presence: Fans claimed the event was billed as a grand felicitation and football masterclass, but Messi’s brief walk-out and quick exit left them feeling cheated. “He came for just 10 minutes. He didn’t take a single kick, no penalty, nothing at all,” one frustrated fan told a news agency.
VIP Barrier: Multiple reports indicated that the Argentine superstar was heavily surrounded by a large contingent of politicians, ministers, and other VIPs, effectively blocking the view for spectators in the stands. “Only leaders and ministers were surrounding Messi… We couldn’t even see him properly,” another fan lamented, demanding a refund.

The anger escalated quickly. Videos showed chaos erupting as disillusioned fans began throwing water bottles and plastic chairs onto the ground, with some attempting to breach barricades. The police had to be deployed to restore order as fans vented their frustration, with one spectator describing the day as a “black day for Kolkata.”

Hyderabad Moves on from the Chaos

Following the disastrous Kolkata leg, the GOAT Tour proceeded to Hyderabad for the evening session at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

While the Hyderabad event, which was scheduled to feature a 7v7 exhibition match and a football clinic, was designed to deliver more on-field action, the lingering dissatisfaction from Kolkata cast a shadow. Fans in Hyderabad were cautiously optimistic, hoping the organizers had learned from the morning’s severe mismanagement and would ensure a clearer view and longer presence from the global icon for the evening’s events.
The highly-anticipated tour, which will next head to Mumbai and conclude in New Delhi, has so far been less a celebration of football and more a logistical nightmare that has left the world’s most passionate fans feeling exploited.
