In a thrilling Premier League encounter, Leeds United held Liverpool to a dramatic 3-3 draw at Elland Road. The result denied Liverpool the opportunity to move up to fifth place in the league table. The Reds had a big chance to go on level with Chelsea, instead they are 8th. The champions are 10 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Substitute Ao Tanaka scored an injury-time equaliser for Leeds, capping off an eventful match where Liverpool led twice but were pegged back each time by Leeds.

Ekitike scores twice after half-time before Leeds make it 2-2

After a goalless first half, Liverpool started the 2nd on a strong note, with Hugo Ekitike scoring twice in quick succession after halftime. However, Leeds United did not back down easily. Ibrahima Konate’s reckless challenge on Wilfried Gnonto led to a penalty for Leeds, which Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted successfully. The home side then leveled the score with Anton Stach finding the net.

More drama in the end

Dominik Szoboszlai thought he had secured the win for Liverpool with a late strike in the 80th minute. However, Leeds United had other plans as Tanaka scored an equalizer in the dying moments of stoppage time from a corner kick. His goal came in the 96th minute.

Key match numbers and points table details

Leeds recorded 12 attempts with 5 shots on target. Arne Slot’s Liverpool clocked 16 attempts with 7 shots on target. Liverpool’s xG was 1.81 compared to Leeds’ 1.51. The Reds created three big chances and had 26 touches in the opposition half.

The result leaves Liverpool eighth in the Premier League table. This was their 2nd draw of the season (W7 L6). They own 23 points from 15 matches. Liverpool have a goal difference of 0. They have scored 24 goals and also conceded 24.

Leeds United moved above Nottingham Forest into 16th place with four points from their last two home games against Chelsea and Liverpool. Both Leeds and Forest have 15 points each and are three above West Ham, who have a game in hand.
