England Bring In Jacks For Gabba Test

England have turned to off-spinner Will Jacks for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, marking his first appearance in the format in three years. Jacks replaces Mark Wood, who is sidelined with knee soreness after the Perth Test.

Batting Depth a Key Factor
The 27-year-old gets the nod ahead of Shoaib Bashir, with England valuing his all-round ability for the day-night contest. Jacks is expected to strengthen the lower order at number eight as the visitors look to recover from their heavy defeat in the series opener.

Khawaja Ruled Out for Australia
Australia suffered a setback with opener Usman Khawaja failing to overcome the back spasms he suffered in Perth. Travis Head will continue at the top after his match-winning century in the first Test, while Josh Inglis is set to join the XI.

Cummins in Contention for Return
Although not originally in the squad, captain Pat Cummins could make a surprise return after participating in training. Teammate Scott Boland said the fast bowler “looked in red-hot form” during practice.

Jacks Earns Chance After White-Ball Shift
Jacks has played only limited red-ball cricket this year, with three first-class matches and five wickets to his name. However, England rate his growing skillset, particularly after his impressive white-ball development and six-wicket haul on debut in Pakistan in 2022.

Day-Night Conditions Add Tactical Weight
Though pink-ball Tests usually favour pace, Nathan Lyon’s strong record under lights highlights the role spin can play. Ben Stokes referenced how Australia deploy Lyon to both attack and speed up overs in shifting conditions.

Bashir Faces Setback in Selection
The decision to drop Shoaib Bashir marks the first time he has been omitted while fit since becoming England’s primary spinner earlier this year. The 22-year-old last played competitive cricket in July after a finger injury and struggled in the warm-up match.

England Seek Rare Win in Australia
England have not won a Test in Australia since 2011 and haven’t triumphed at the Gabba since 1986. They have lost their past 16 Tests in the country, including all three previous day-night matches. Australia, meanwhile, have only one defeat in 14 pink-ball Tests.

England XI for Second Test
Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.

Experts Weigh In on Selection Call
Michael Vaughan believes England have chosen more batting power, acknowledging Jacks as a reliable option but not a frontline spinner. Phil Tufnell sees the move as tactical rather than reactive, stressing the need for controlled spin in hot conditions.
