Rohit Sharma — From World Cup Warrior to Face of ICC T20 World Cup 2026

A journey spanning nearly two decades, nine consecutive T20 World Cups and two glittering championship medals — Rohit Sharma’s remarkable run with the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is entering a new chapter. For the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2007, the ‘Hitman’ will not be walking out in national colours when the 2026 edition begins in India next February. Instead, he will step into a different spotlight — as the official Brand Ambassador of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The announcement came on Tuesday from ICC Chairman Jay Shah, marking yet another milestone for the modern legend who has shaped India’s white-ball era. Calling the honour “truly special,” Rohit acknowledged that it is rare for players still active in cricket to be named an ICC ambassador.

But even as accolades pour in, Rohit admitted that this transition phase has not been easy. After retiring from T20Is last June and ending his Test journey earlier this year, accepting the idea of watching a World Cup from home feels surreal.

“I’m still getting used to sitting at home and watching it on TV,” he said with a smile, confessing that the thought of not being in the dressing room remains unfamiliar.

Only two players have appeared in all nine editions of the T20 World Cup — and Rohit stands alone as the only Indian to achieve that feat. Now, as fans prepare to experience a new generation under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership, Rohit hopes India can create the same spark that defined their triumph in 2024.

A Legacy Etched in World Cup Brilliance

Rohit remains one of the few cricketers to be part of two T20 World Cup–winning squads — the 2007 inaugural success and the memorable 2024 title secured under his captaincy.

His journey began with a fearless debut in 2007, scoring 88 unbeaten runs in the tournament, including a spectacular 50* against South Africa and a crucial 30* in the final versus Pakistan.

Seventeen years later, in 2024, he led with fire and finesse — India’s highest run-getter with 257 runs at a strike rate of 156.70, smashing Australia for a heroic 92 off 41 in the Super Eights and anchoring a semi-final win with 57 off 39 versus England.

Speaking about the long gap between global triumphs, Rohit reflected:

“Winning any global trophy is extremely challenging. Between 2014 and 2023, we were desperate. That made the recent wins even more meaningful.”

Stepping into a Larger Role

As Brand Ambassador, Rohit will be central to global promotion, fan outreach and development initiatives aimed at making the 2026 event “the biggest, most accessible and most global T20 World Cup ever.” ICC sees in him not just a champion cricketer, but a voice that unites billions.

His legacy, popularity, humility and leadership now power a mission beyond boundaries — bringing the world together through cricket.

Still Not Done Yet

Despite his retirement from T20Is, Rohit clarified one thing firmly: “I am still playing.”

He will rejoin the Indian squad later this week in Ranchi for the three-match ODI series against South Africa.

A New Beginning

From the young Mumbai teenager who stunned the world in 2007, to the captain who lifted India to glory in 2024, and now the ambassador shaping the future of global cricket — Rohit Sharma’s story continues to evolve.

The bat may rest for this World Cup, but his influence has never been stronger.

And this time, he will roar for India — from beyond the boundary.
