Cristiano Ronaldo Confirms 2026 World Cup Will Mark His Final Bow

Bhubaneswar:

Portugal Star Sets Timeline For Retirement

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final major tournament of his illustrious career. The 40-year-old forward, who will be 41 when the tournament kicks off in the United States, Canada and Mexico, stated that he expects to retire “within one or two years”, marking the end of an era for one of football’s greatest icons.

Ronaldo said he continues to feel physically strong and motivated, but believes the time is approaching to bring his 25-year journey in professional football to a close. His sixth World Cup appearance will therefore serve as a historic milestone—and a farewell.

A Legacy That Redefined Modern Football

Since his professional debut in 2002, Ronaldo has amassed an unparalleled list of accomplishments, including record-breaking goal tallies for both club and country. He emphasised that he has “given everything” to the sport, reflecting on decades of achievements, personal milestones, and global influence.

The veteran forward noted he is proud of the records he has set, but insisted that his retirement plans stem from a desire to prioritise family and personal life after more than two decades at the top level.

Focus Turns To Family And The Next Generation

Ronaldo also spoke warmly about his son, Cristiano Jr, who is rising through Portugal’s youth ranks. He expressed hope that his son may one day surpass his achievements, but urged him not to feel pressured by comparisons.

“Be happy, be free,” Ronaldo said, highlighting his wish for his son to enjoy the game without the weight of expectation that follows the family name.

A Historic Farewell Awaits

With the world already anticipating the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo’s announcement adds emotional weight to a tournament that may mark the final chapter of one of football’s most decorated careers. Fans, players and analysts alike are preparing to witness the last World Cup appearance of a legend whose influence on global football will endure long after his final match.
