Lionel Messi Hints at 2026 World Cup Appearance — But With One Big Condition

Lionel Messi may not be done with the FIFA World Cup just yet. The Argentine legend, who led his nation to an emotional triumph in Qatar 2022, has revealed that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of featuring in the 2026 edition — provided his body allows it.

At 38, Messi continues to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, and despite the physical demands of top-level football, he insists the desire to represent Argentina remains alive. “I’ll decide closer to the time,” he said in a recent interview. “It depends on how I feel physically. If I’m fit and can still contribute to the team, I’d love to be there.”

The 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, would mark Messi’s sixth appearance at the tournament — an extraordinary milestone in football history. He will turn 39 just before the tournament begins, meaning longevity and performance will be key factors in his final decision.

For fans, the thought of Messi returning to defend Argentina’s crown is electrifying. The image of him lifting the trophy in Qatar remains etched in sporting memory — a career-defining moment that completed the fairytale after years of heartbreak. Yet, Messi’s comments reflect realism over romance. “I don’t want to just be there; I want to be useful. If I’m not at 100 percent, it wouldn’t be fair to the team,” he explained.

Inter Miami recently extended Messi’s contract through 2028, signaling that retirement isn’t imminent. Still, balancing club football in the U.S. with international duty could prove challenging as he nears 40. Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni has publicly left the door open, saying “the national team will always be Messi’s home.”

The 2026 edition could therefore deliver one of football’s most emotional storylines: the sport’s greatest modern player contemplating one final dance on the world’s biggest stage.

Whether he ultimately plays or not, Messi’s legacy is secure — seven Ballon d’Or titles, a Copa América, an Olympic gold, and the World Cup. But as long as there’s even a glimmer of possibility, the world will be watching — hoping for one last act in a career that has redefined greatness.
