India Finish Runners-Up at Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy, Earn Historic Promotion to Top Tier
Muscat (Oman), October 26: The Indian men’s rugby sevens team scripted history by earning promotion to the elite Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Series (ARESS) for the 2026 season, even as they finished runners-up at the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy (AREST) 2025 held in Muscat, Oman, on Sunday.
India went down 0–27 to a strong Kazakhstan side in the final but their remarkable run through the tournament ensured a landmark achievement — a place in Division 1 of the continental series. Both finalists of the Trophy division are promoted to the top tier, marking India’s first-ever elevation to this level.
The team displayed consistent form throughout the competition, dominating their opponents in the group and knockout stages. India began their campaign with a close 14–10 win over Lebanon, followed by emphatic victories against Afghanistan (26–5) and Iran (21–7) in the quarterfinal. They sealed their final berth with a commanding 17–0 triumph over Saudi Arabia in the semifinal — their fourth consecutive win.
Although the final against Kazakhstan proved a tough outing, the Indian side showcased grit and discipline throughout the tournament, reflecting the steady progress of rugby in the country.
Team officials hailed the promotion as a defining moment for Indian rugby, saying it will inspire greater participation and investment in the sport ahead of the 2026 season.
