Just days shy of his 18th birthday, Su Yiming stunned the world at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, winning gold in the men’s big air and silver in slopestyle. The teenager’s Olympic success transformed him from a national talent into a global sensation almost overnight.
Though Su had already been a familiar face in China as a child actor, it was snowboarding that captured the hearts of millions and propelled him into the international spotlight. Luxury brands, media appearances, and social media fame quickly followed, cementing his status as a superstar.
Snowboarding Runs in the Family
Su’s parents were both snowboarders, and by age four, the young Su was already navigating the slopes. Initially using a board far too big for him, he spent years mastering the sport. By his teenage years, snowboarding had become second nature, a passion that would define his future.
“I really try to show young people that once you have a dream, putting 100% into it will make it come true,” Su told CNN Sports from a training camp in Switzerland.
A Career That Started in Film
Before his Olympic glory, Su gained fame in Chinese cinema. He played Zi Shuan in The Taking of Tiger Mountain and appeared in other films and TV shows. Yet even as his acting career flourished, the pull of snowboarding never waned. When Beijing was awarded the 2022 Games, Su turned his focus fully to the sport.
The Making of an Olympic Champion
Su’s journey to Olympic gold was fueled by relentless dedication. Competing seriously from 2019, he honed his skills for years until his selection for the Beijing Games. His victories — silver in slopestyle and gold in big air — marked the pinnacle of his teenage dreams.
But the aftermath brought an unexpected challenge: post-Olympic burnout. “After winning gold, I woke up and felt like there was nothing else I wanted,” he said. He took a year and a half off to recharge mentally and physically, enjoying snowboarding just for fun and reconnecting with life outside competition.
A Balanced Life Beyond the Spotlight
Su’s life is now a blend of intense training and personal balance. He enjoys time with family, plays pool, goes fishing and surfing, and stays grounded despite his global fame. These moments of calm help him maintain perspective as he prepares for his next challenge: defending his Olympic title in Italy.
“People are expecting more from you, and that’s why you feel pressure,” Su explained. “I use that pressure for motivation.”
Looking Ahead
As the world anticipates the next Winter Games, Su Yiming embodies both humility and ambition. From child actor to Olympic champion, he has proven that talent, hard work, and resilience can transform dreams into reality.
