Paris – World time-trial champions Remco Evenepoel and Marlen Reusser both secured European titles in France on Wednesday, pulling off impressive victories less than 48 hours after returning from a challenging journey back from Rwanda.
Evenepoel Dominates Men’s Race Despite Travel
Decked out in his Olympic gold helmet and World Champion rainbow jersey, Belgium’s Evenepoel dominated the men’s event in the wind-blown Drome-Ardeche region.
- Victory Margin: Evenepoel relegated Italy’s Filippo Ganna to second place by a significant 43 seconds. Denmark’s Niklas Larsen finished third, a further 25 seconds back.
- The Challenge: Evenepoel’s win is particularly notable as he had just won the silver medal in the road race in Kigali on Sunday, followed by an overnight flight to Marseille and a connecting car trip.
- Athlete’s Take: Despite the long journey, the champion said he felt “quite fresh” after getting to bed early and relaxing. However, he was initially stressed by a faulty earpiece, only hearing from his coach 1.5 km from the finish that he was 30 seconds ahead. He nonetheless pushed “full gas” to the line.
Reusser Secures Fourth European Title
Switzerland’s Reusser, a 34-year-old qualified doctor, claimed her fourth European title with a comfortable victory.
- Victory Margin: She finished 49 seconds ahead of silver medalist Mie Ottestad of Norway and seconds ahead of fellow Norwegian Katrine Aalerud in third.
- The Journey: Reusser thanked her Swiss team for organizing a smooth 6,500 Km ( 4-038 miles) trip from Kigali via Ethiopia and for finding a comfortable hotel.
- Perspective: Reusser acknowledged the fatigue, stating she couldn’t be “too confident” after the big trip, but noted that she had more rest than Evenepoel, who had raced on Sunday. Her trip followed her winning the women’s world time-trial, taking bronze in the mixed relay, and racing in the road race in Kigali the previous Saturday.
The ability of both reigning world champions to recover from transcontinental travel and immediately win major continental titles is a remarkable testament to their fitness and focus.
