Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s fluent half-century and skipper Ayush Mhatre’s decisive three-wicket spell powered India U19 to a 51-run victory against Australia U19 in the second Youth ODI on Wednesday. The result gave India an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with the final clash scheduled at Ian Healy Oval on Friday.
India post strong total
After losing Mhatre for a duck early, Suryavanshi (70 off 68) rebuilt the innings with Vihaan Malhotra (70 off 74). Their 117-run stand steadied the innings before Suryavanshi’s dismissal halted the momentum. Wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu (71 off 64) kept the scoreboard moving in the middle overs, guiding India to a competitive 300 all out in 49.4 overs. Australia’s Will Bryom (3/71) and Yash Deshmukh (2/31) were the pick of the bowlers.
Draper’s century in vain
Australia’s chase faltered early, slipping from 63 for one to 63 for four after quick strikes from off-spinner Kanishk Chouhan. At 109 for six, the hosts looked in deep trouble before Jayden Draper launched a counterattack. The right-hander smashed 102 off 72 balls, adding 112 runs with Aryan Sharma (38). Their resistance gave the Aussies a lifeline, but Mhatre returned with the ball to remove both set batters in quick succession, ending Australia’s fight.
Mhatre delivers the knockout blow
Mhatre’s three for 27 ensured India wrapped up the innings for 249 in 47.2 overs, sealing the win with breathing space. Draper’s lone effort stood out for Australia, but the lack of support from the top order proved costly.
