Bloemfontein, South Africa – The Suzuki Griquas delivered a masterful first-half performance to secure a resounding 40-10 bonus-point victory over the Toyota Cheetahs in the Carling Currie Cup on Friday night. The win, which saw the Griquas score five tries in the opening half, propelled them from third place to the top of the league standings.

A First-Half Masterclass

Griquas wasted no time in asserting their dominance, racing to a 21-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. Flyhalf George Whitehead opened the scoring with a try and a conversion in the third minute. Just three minutes later, outside centre Zane Bester burst through for another converted try, and scrumhalf Caleb Abrahams followed with a quick blindside snipe to make it three tries in the first quarter.

The home side responded in the 26th minute with a maul try from hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg, but Griquas hit back almost immediately. Wing Gurshwin Wehr dotted down in the corner after a superb run, and fullback Cameron Hufke added another try just before the break, giving the Griquas a commanding 33-5 halftime lead.

Discipline Woes in a Tighter Second Half

The second half was a different affair, with both teams locked in a fierce battle. The Cheetahs fought to claw their way back into the game, but it was Griquas who broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Wehr intercepted a loose pass and sprinted away for his second try, effectively ending the contest.

Griquas’ discipline then became an issue, as they were reduced to just 12 players after three quickfire yellow cards. Replacement prop Leon Lyons, scrumhalf Abrahams, and lock Albert Leibenberg were all sent to the bin for cynical play and repeated infringements. The Cheetahs took advantage of the numerical superiority to score a consolation try through Daniel Maartens, but they were unable to add any further points.

The bonus-point win means the Griquas now sit atop the Currie Cup log, though their position is not yet secure as the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers could still leapfrog them with a bonus-point win on Saturday.
