Bhubaneshwar- The National Football League is a true meritocracy, where roster spots are not just given but earned through exceptional performance. With 53-man rosters now finalized, a number of first-year players drafted after the first round have proven their worth with eye-catching displays during the preseason. Here are six such rookies who showed the potential to make an immediate impact once the regular season gets underway.

Shedeur Sanders, Quarterback – Round 5, No. 144 Overall

Despite a disappointing performance in the preseason finale, Shedeur Sanders flashed the talent that suggests he can develop into an effective pro-style quarterback. Playing with the No. 1 unit in the preseason opener, the rookie quarterback demonstrated impressive touch, timing, and accuracy, earning praise for working through his progressions to deliver a handful of tight-window throws. Though a five-sack performance in the final preseason game likely cost him the backup quarterback job, he did secure a roster spot, making veteran Kenny Pickett expendable.

TreVeyon Henderson, Running Back – Round 2, No. 38 Overall

The Ohio State product has been as explosive as advertised. Henderson announced his arrival by housing a 100-yard kickoff return in his preseason debut and followed up with an 8-yard touchdown scamper in Week 2. With his blazing 4.43-second 40-yard dash speed, Henderson is poised to play a major role as a multidimensional playmaker for the Patriots, slotted in as the number two running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson.

Will Johnson, Cornerback – Round 2, No. 47 Overall

After suffering a draft-day slide, Will Johnson quickly silenced his doubters with standout performances. The Michigan product demonstrated excellent footwork, fundamentals, and instincts throughout the preseason, which likely cemented his spot as a starter in the Cardinals’ sub-packages. As a natural number one cornerback with superb ball skills, he has shown the potential to be a playmaking specialist in the team’s “see ball, get ball” defense.

Tyler Loop, Kicker – Round 6, No. 186 Overall

Tyler Loop was tasked with the immense challenge of replacing seven-time Pro Bowler Justin Tucker, and he appears to be well on his way to becoming a household name. The rookie kicker converted an impressive 81.8% of his field-goal attempts, including a 61-yarder, and was perfect on all eight of his extra-point tries. His model of consistency is exactly what the Ravens expect from their new kicker.

Isaac TeSlaa, Wide Receiver – Round 3, No. 70 Overall

The big-bodied pass catcher has quieted skeptics who questioned his selection, tormenting defenders throughout the preseason. TeSlaa hauled in 10 receptions for 146 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his polished route running and outstanding speed for a player of his size (6-foot-4, 214 pounds). The Arkansas product has proven to be a valuable weapon for quarterback Jared Goff.

Adin Huntington, Defensive Tackle – Undrafted

Undrafted free agent Adin Huntington has earned his spot on the roster with a high-motor and disruptive game. Though his smaller stature could limit him as an every-down player, Huntington’s relentless effort and infectious energy could land him a key role as a situational pass rusher in the Browns’ sub-packages. His performance was even highlighted on “Baldy’s Breakdowns,” cementing his status as a player to watch.
