BCCI Steps In After South Zone Leaves Out India Stars From Duleep Trophy

BCCI Issues Directive To State Associations

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written to all its state associations directing them to include centrally-contracted national players in the Duleep Trophy squads. The move comes after South Zone selectors left out several top India cricketers including KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna, and Sai Sudharsan.

“Maintain Prestige Of The Tournament”

In the letter, BCCI General Manager of Cricket Operations Abey Kuruvilla emphasized that the participation of India players was critical “to uphold the prestige of the tournament and ensure the highest quality of competition.” The board has consistently maintained that international cricketers must feature in domestic tournaments when available, a measure aimed at strengthening the domestic structure.

State Associations Voice Concerns

Some associations, however, have expressed reservations, arguing that giving preference to centrally-contracted players denies opportunities to consistent Ranji Trophy performers. They believe the Duleep Trophy should reward domestic achievements rather than serve as a platform for India regulars.

Other Zones Set To Feature Big Names

Despite the controversy in the South Zone, several India internationals are expected to play for other zones. Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, Akash Deep, Shreyas Iyer, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh are among the high-profile names included across squads, setting up a competitive edition of the tournament.
