Dal Lake to Host First-Ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival

Srinagar: The world-famous Dal Lake is set to come alive with the splash of oars and the rhythm of drums as it hosts the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival from August 21 to 23, 2025.

The three-day sporting extravaganza marks the first national-level water sports competition under the government’s Khelo India initiative, organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council.

Over 400 Athletes to Compete

More than 400 athletes from 36 States and Union Territories will participate in the event, vying for 24 gold medals across three disciplines – rowing, canoeing, and kayaking. The competition will feature 14 kayaking and canoeing events and 10 rowing events, offering a national stage for budding and elite athletes alike.

Among the participating states, Odisha stands out with its strong water sports contingent, building on its recent investments in rowing and canoeing infrastructure. Athletes from the coastal state are expected to be strong medal contenders.

Adding to the excitement, spectators will witness thrilling demonstration events, including water skiing, a dragon boat race, and a special Shikara sprint – celebrating Kashmir’s traditional boat culture.

Big Names & Local Stars

Among the top contenders is Olympian Arjun Lal Jat, who previously won a silver medal in lightweight double sculls at the 2022 Asian Games. He will compete in the men’s single sculls event, bringing international experience to the waters of Dal Lake.

Local athletes from Jammu & Kashmir are also gearing up to make their mark, with many state champions aiming for national recognition.

Boost to Tourism & Local Livelihoods

Officials say the festival will not only promote grassroots sports but also provide a major boost to tourism and local livelihoods. Shikara operators, houseboat owners, and artisans are expected to benefit from the influx of visitors.

The event is designed to blend sports with culture, showcasing Kashmiri traditions, ecological awareness, and heritage. A special festival mascot inspired by the Himalayan Kingfisher has also been unveiled, symbolizing vibrancy and resilience.

Preparations in Full Swing

Ahead of the festival, large-scale cleanup drives have been undertaken to prepare Dal Lake for the mega event. Special sporting infrastructure, spectator arrangements, and cultural showcases have been put in place to ensure an unforgettable experience.

A Historic Beginning

Speaking about the significance of the festival, organizers highlighted that this initiative will set the stage for Kashmir to become a hub of water sports in India, while giving local athletes the exposure to compete against the country’s best.

As the Dal Lake waters get ready to echo with cheers, paddles, and cultural celebrations, the Khelo India Water Sports Festival 2025 promises to be a landmark event in India’s sporting journey – with Odisha’s presence adding to the competitive spirit.
