Why is World Champion D Gukesh skipping the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess?

Bhubaneswar : D Gukesh decided not to play in the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess event because he is feeling exhausted from recent tournaments. After a busy schedule, including a tough run at Norway Chess, he told organizers he needed rest and wanted to focus on recovery.

Is this a surprising decision?

Somewhat. Gukesh was expected to join since he is a top player, but the tournament co-founder Jan Henric Buettner said they were prepared for this, as Gukesh’s recent performances weren’t his strongest, and rest was important for him.

What will Gukesh do instead?

He is concentrating on the upcoming Grandmaster Tour main event, focusing on classical chess, which is his main priority for growth and success.

Who is representing India at the Vegas Freestyle event?

India has three strong players competing: R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, and Vidit Gujrathi. Praggnanandhaa is in Magnus Carlsen’s group, making it an exciting challenge.

What makes the Vegas Freestyle Chess special?

The event features 16 elite players battling for a total prize pool of $750,000. It’s a unique format called freestyle or Chess960, where starting positions are randomized to encourage creative play. Also, Bibisara Assaubayeva is making history as the first woman competing against the world’s best in this format.

What’s next for fans and players?

Fans can look forward to seeing Gukesh back in action soon at the Grandmaster Tour. Meanwhile, the Vegas event promises thrilling games with rising stars and legends battling in an innovative chess format.
