Gukesh Dominates Rapid Chess in Zagreb: How the World Champion Seized the Grand Chess Tour Title

Zagreb, Croatia – D. Gukesh, the reigning World Champion, has reaffirmed his elite status by clinching the rapid title at the Grand Chess Tour 2025 Rapid & Blitz event in Zagreb, Croatia, on Friday. The 19-year-old chess prodigy showcased a blend of resilience, aggressive play, and calculated strategy to emerge victorious, with Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda securing second place.

The Champion’s Unstoppable Surge

Gukesh’s path to the rapid title was marked by an extraordinary display of form. After an initial setback with a loss in the very first round, the young champion demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude. He then embarked on a dominant streak, registering five consecutive wins. This impressive run included a pivotal victory against none other than the chess titan, Magnus Carlsen, a win that propelled him into a clear sole lead.

Following this powerful surge, Gukesh maintained his advantage by securing draws in the seventh and eighth rounds against Anish Giri and Ivan Saric, respectively. He then sealed his triumph with a decisive win against Wesley So in the final round of the rapid section, culminating with an impressive 14 points.

Key Factors Behind Gukesh’s Victory

Gukesh’s commanding performance can be attributed to several critical factors:

  • Resilience after Early Setback: His ability to bounce back immediately after an opening round loss highlights strong psychological control and determination. This is a hallmark of top-tier athletes who can convert adversity into motivation.
  • Aggressive and Strategic Play: The string of five consecutive wins, particularly against a player of Carlsen’s caliber, indicates an aggressive yet well-calculated approach. He likely exploited opponent weaknesses and capitalized on tactical opportunities.
  • Consistency and Composure: After establishing a lead, Gukesh didn’t falter. Drawing against strong opponents like Giri and Saric demonstrated his ability to consolidate his position and avoid unnecessary risks when holding an advantage. His final-round victory against Wesley So under pressure solidified his claim.
  • Strong Form: As the reigning World Champion, Gukesh came into the tournament with immense confidence and proven ability. This mental edge, combined with his recent experience at the highest level, undoubtedly contributed to his strong performance.

Rapid Section Standings and Tournament Context

Jan-Krzysztof Duda finished second with 11 points, while Magnus Carlsen secured third place with 10 points. India’s other participant, R. Praggnanandhaa, garnered nine points, sharing fourth place with Fabiano Caruana.

The tournament now shifts focus to the blitz section, scheduled for this weekend on July 5 and 6. The overall Grand Chess Tour 2025 Rapid & Blitz title will be awarded to the player with the highest combined points across both rapid and blitz formats.

This event marks the third stop on the Grand Chess Tour 2025 calendar, following earlier editions in Poland and Romania in April and May, respectively. Notably, Praggnanandhaa had previously won the title in Bucharest, Romania, and secured a third-place finish in Warsaw, Poland, highlighting India’s strong presence in elite chess. The tour will continue with two more tournaments in the U.S. in August, culminating in Brazil from September to October, which will feature classic, rapid, and blitz sections.
