The course record at Detroit Golf Club was not only threatened but utterly rewritten on Thursday at the Rocket Classic. What started with a tie quickly escalated into a new benchmark, then another.
A Day of Record-Breaking Golf
First, rising Australian star Min Woo Lee shot an impressive 9-under-par 63, matching the existing course record. However, his achievement was swiftly eclipsed. South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter then completed a sensational 10-under 62, establishing a new course record.
New Leaders Emerge
Just moments after Potgieter’s stellar round, Kevin Roy also carded a 62, joining Potgieter in a tie for the lead heading into Friday’s play. By the end of the day, the previous record of 63 seemed almost common, as Mark Hubbard and Max Greyserman also finished with that score.
How Did They Do It
Potgieter’s round was ignited by an incredible start, as he fired a 7-under 29 on the back nine, featuring five birdies and an eagle. He continued his momentum with birdies on Holes 1, 7, and 8, narrowly missing a 61 with a close birdie attempt on Hole 9.
Roy finished his round with a dramatic eagle-birdie flourish to match Potgieter’s score. He chipped in for an eagle from 30 feet on the par-5 17th hole, then stuck his approach shot on the 18th to within five feet, setting up his final birdie.
