The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) senior selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce the Asia Cup 2025 squad on August 19. Early indications suggest that Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal may not be part of the T20 line-up, with the selectors looking to retain the core that has performed under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
According to a report in Sportstar, Gill—currently India’s Test captain—and Jaiswal are unlikely to be included in the Asia Cup squad. The move is believed to be a strategic decision aimed at preserving the duo for India’s upcoming Test series against the West Indies, which begins just days after the Asia Cup concludes on September 28.
In contrast, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is set for a comeback after playing a pivotal role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year. Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, who enhanced his reputation as a power-hitter during the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is also likely to be rewarded with a place in the squad.
The Asia Cup will serve as a crucial platform for India to fine-tune its T20 combination ahead of future international assignments. The inclusion of experienced players such as Iyer and the explosive finishing of Jitesh Sharma highlights the selectors’ intent to balance reliability with firepower, while resting key all-format players like Gill and Jaiswal to manage workload.
