US Open Shatters Records with $85 Million Prize Money Total, Redefining Grand Slam Earnings

New York : The US Open has once again set new benchmarks in tennis history by unveiling the largest prize money pool ever offered at a Grand Slam tournament. The 2025 edition boasts a staggering total prize money of nearly $85 million distributed across singles, doubles, qualifying, and wheelchair competitions. Including an additional $5 million earmarked for player support costs such as travel and accommodation, the total player compensation reaches $90 million—a 20% leap from last year’s $75 million.

This significant increase comes at a pivotal moment when players across the ATP and WTA Tours collectively demanded a larger share of revenues from the four major Grand Slams. Earlier this year, the top 20 men’s and women’s players penned a letter calling for more equitable prize distributions and a say in decisions directly impacting them at the Grand Slams.

For the first time in tennis history, both the men’s and women’s singles champions at the US Open will each receive a record $5 million prize, surpassing the winnings at Wimbledon ($4.01 million), the French Open (~$2.97 million), and the Australian Open (~$2.26 million). Beyond the champions, prize money for runners-up, semifinalists, and all main draw participants has also been raised significantly. For instance, players exiting in the first round will take home $110,000, marking a notable increase from previous years.

The 2025 US Open will also introduce a new $1 million prize for winning teams in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles competitions—another historic first in the sport.

This year’s tournament kicks off on August 19 with the mixed doubles event and runs until September 8 at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium, which is currently undergoing an $800 million renovation, underscoring the USTA’s commitment to elevating the event’s stature.

The US Open, historically the first Grand Slam to offer equal prize money for men and women since 1973, continues to lead the charge in prize money innovation. While the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon have also increased their purses for 2025, none have matched the US Open’s leap, which stands as a milestone in tennis’s economic landscape.

As the season finale Grand Slam, the US Open’s record-breaking prize pool not only rewards excellence at the highest level but also reinforces the growing influence and voice of players within the sport’s governance.
