Bulawayo :New Zealand have confirmed all-rounder Mitchell Santner as captain for the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe, stepping in after regular skipper Tom Latham was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. The two-match series begins July 30 in Bulawayo and marks Santner’s maiden appearance as Test captain, becoming the 32nd player to lead the Blackcaps in the format.

Latham, who sustained the injury while fielding in an English domestic T20 match earlier this month, has remained with the touring squad but has not recovered in time for the first Test. His availability for the second match, starting August 7, will depend on a fitness assessment closer to the date.

A Trusted Hand At The Helm

Santner’s elevation comes on the back of his growing leadership credentials. The 33-year-old left-arm spinner and middle-order batter recently captained New Zealand’s T20 side to an unbeaten Tri-Series victory in Harare. Known for his composure and tactical awareness, Santner brings a wealth of experience, having played 30 Tests and contributed over 1,000 runs and 70 wickets in the format.

Head coach Rob Walter expressed confidence in Santner’s leadership:
“Mitch has proven himself as a leader in the white-ball formats and commands respect across the dressing room. While it’s disappointing to lose Tom, we’re fortunate to have someone of Mitch’s calibre to step up and guide the side through this important series.”

Opportunity For Newcomers Amidst Continuity

The 15-member squad for the Test series reflects a blend of proven performers and rising talent. With Latham sidelined, players like Rachin Ravindra and Will Young may see expanded roles in the batting order. New Zealand will also rely on the experience of Matt Henry, Ajaz Patel, and Daryl Mitchell to anchor the bowling and middle-order respectively.

New Zealand Squad For Zimbabwe Test Series:

Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O’Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Michael Bracewell, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner (captain), Nathan Smith, Will Young, Tom Latham (injured – not available for 1st Test)

Blackcaps Eyeing Historic Continuity

New Zealand have never lost a Test series to Zimbabwe and last faced them in the longest format in 2016. The current tour offers a chance to extend that dominance while providing valuable match time ahead of a busy Test calendar.

The Bulawayo venue, known for its spin-friendly conditions, could suit Santner’s style of play as both a bowler and leader.

What’s Next

1st Test: July 30 – August 3, Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo

2nd Test: August 7 – August 11, same venue

Santner’s appointment marks a strategic phase in New Zealand’s transition, with the series doubling as a platform to test leadership depth and blood new combinations.

With a calm presence and tactical sharpness, Santner steps into the captaincy spotlight – ready to steer the Blackcaps through a short but meaningful Test challenge in southern Africa.
