Mohammed Afsal Shatters the 1:45 Barrier, Sets New National Record in Men’s 800m

In an electrifying performance at the Memoriał Czesława Cybulskiego meet in Poznań, Poland, India’s middle-distance maestro Mohammed Afsal Pulikkalakath etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian to break the coveted 1:45 mark in the men’s 800m. Clocking an astonishing 1:44.93, he demolished his previous record of 1:45.61 and stamped his authority as the country’s fastest ever in this distance.

A Milestone Moment

The 29‑year‑old from Palappuram, Kerala, shattered his own national record set earlier this year in Dubai at the UAE Athletics Grand Prix, where he had clocked 1:45.61.

Taking part in a fiercely competitive race dominated by Polish athletes, Afsal valiantly finished sixth in his heat—yet lowered his timing to a stunning personal best of 1:44.93.

International Stage, Indian Brilliance

Afsal’s momentous run took place at a Continental Tour Silver event, memorializing legendary Polish coach Czesław Cybulski.

The podium was a European affair: Maciej Wyderka clinched gold in 1:44.23, followed by Poland’s Filip Ostrowski (1:44.25) and Patryk Sieradzki (1:44.56).

From Kerala to the World

Afsal’s journey is inspiring: from winning gold at the Asian School Championships in 2013 to silver at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and record triumphs in Dubai and Poland, he continues rising the ranks. Supported by the Reliance Foundation in Bengaluru and proudly serving as a Junior Warrant Officer in the Indian Air Force, his story is one of dedication, discipline, and patriotism.

What It Means for Indian Athletics

Breaking the 1:45 mark has been a long-cherished dream for Indian middle-distance running. Afsal’s achievement not only rewrites the record books—it also signals India’s arrival on the global stage in the 800m.This legendary run may inspire more athletes, investment, and development in India’s athletic ecosystem.

Afsal Speaks

“As an athlete, surpassing 1:45 has been my dream. To finally achieve it in such a strong international field is incredibly special—and I believe this is just the beginning,” Afsal shared after the race.

With the World Championships qualifying standard still challenging, Afsal now has a major target: 1:44.50—the automatic mark for global competition.

Given his steady upward trajectory and unwavering spirit, Indian athletics fans across the nation—and especially his supportive community in Kerala—will watch breathlessly for his next leap.

Mohammed Afsal has not only rewritten a record—he’s redefined the possibility of Indian middle-distance running. If he continues this momentum, the next season could well witness a sub‑1:44 performance and qualification at the world stage.
