Indian Juniors Shine at South Korea Squash Tournament

Jaipur :  Indian squash continued to make waves on the international junior circuit as a talented group of young players delivered an impressive haul of medals at the prestigious South Korea Junior Squash Open.

The contingent, featuring promising names from across India, showcased skill and composure against top-seeded players from Asia. With determined performances across multiple age categories, the Indian squad underlined the growing depth of talent in the country’s squash ecosystem.

Among the standout performers was Jaipur’s own Aarav Singh, who claimed the boys’ under-17 gold medal with a thrilling five-game victory over Hong Kong’s Ethan Lau. After trailing 1–2, Aarav produced a gutsy comeback, combining deft drops with relentless retrieving to take the final two games and seal the title.

“It’s an incredible feeling to win here. The level of competition was really high, but I stayed positive and trusted my game plan,” Aarav said after his win.

In the girls’ under-15 event, India’s Mehak Sharma earned a silver medal following a hard-fought final against Korea’s top seed Kim Ji-woo. Despite losing in four games, Mehak impressed with her attacking style and court coverage, signalling her potential as one of India’s brightest prospects.

Other notable performances included:

Rohan Kulkarni securing bronze in the boys’ under-19 category.

Saanvi Deshpande reaching the semifinals in girls’ under-13.

Aditya Pillai finishing fourth in boys’ under-15.

The team’s coach, Arjun Verma, praised the players’ discipline and spirit. “This tournament is a great benchmark. Competing against the best in Asia helps our juniors adapt to different playing styles and build confidence. We’re proud of the way they handled the pressure,” he said.

Indian squash has been on an upward trajectory, with more juniors breaking into the top echelons of Asian rankings. Initiatives such as improved grassroots coaching, targeted exposure trips, and advanced fitness programs are bearing fruit.

The players will return to India later this week and resume training for the upcoming Asian Junior Squash Championships, where they hope to further build on this momentum.
