Eng Vs Ind. 2nd Test: What to Look Out For on Day 5

Birmingham– As Day 5 dawns on July 6, all eyes turn to Edgbaston, where England faces the near-impossible task of chasing 608 runs—a target no side has ever cleared in Test history. With overcast skies expected to hold and a time-rich morning session ahead, England must strike immediately to stay alive. Key factors:

  • New-ball strategy: Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj have already struck on Day 4 and will look to repeat the trick with the new ball.
  • Spinners’ role: Jadeja and Sundar will be crucial as the pitch softens, offering turn in the latter half of the day.
  • England’s mindset: Can they take early wickets and chase, or will they switch to survival mode as hinted by Harry Brook?

A gripping finish is on the cards—either India clinches a series-levelling win or England digs deep to force a draw.

Day 4 Highlights & Gill’s Masterclass

  1. Monumental Declaration & Bustling Batting Line-up

India declared at 427/6, setting England 608 to win on the back of stellar contributions:

  • Shubman Gill: Following his Match 1 double-ton, he continued his hot streak with a fluent, belted 161 off 129 balls—including nine fours and three sixes. The knock followed his first-innings 269, pushing his Test tally to a phenomenal 430 runs—second-highest ever in a single Test and overtaking Gavaskar’s Indian record.
  • Supporting efforts came from KL Rahul (55), Rishabh Pant (65), and Ravindra Jadeja, reinforcing the commanding positioning.
  1. Early Collapse in England’s Chase

England resumed poorly, ending Day 4 at 72/3, needing a daunting 536 more runs:

  • Akash Deep claimed two early wickets, including Ben Duckett’s edge and a sharp catch, echoing his earlier swing influence.
  • Mohammed Siraj struck too, removing the dangerous Crawley, signaling India’s early control.
  1. England’s Mental Shift

Amid mounting pressure, England’s Harry Brook remained optimistic—“I still think we can win this… if we take a couple of early wickets tomorrow”. Yet, with no side ever chasing beyond 418 in Tests, a strategic recalibration towards drawing the game looms large.

The Gill Effect & Series Outlook

Shubman Gill’s captaincy has been defining—his aura blossoming into that of a match-winner, earning praise from even Virat Kohli. With the series tied 1–1, the prospect of India seizing momentum with a historic win at Edgbaston is tantalizing.

Summary : Day 5 promises a spectacle. Will India complete the chase-defying demolition—or can England rise to the occasion and save the Test? Either way, it’s bound to be one of the most thrilling conclusions in recent Test cricket.
