Teen Titan’s Rise: Tanvi Sharma Storms into US Open Final

Council Bluffs, June 29, 2025 — Sixteen-year-old Tanvi Sharma has announced herself on the big stage, powering past Ukraine’s seventh-seed Polina Buhrova in straight sets (21‑14, 21‑16) in just 34 minutes to reach the women’s singles final of the BWF Super 300 US Open at the Mid-America Center .

Hailing from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, and honing her craft at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, Sharma has lit up the tournament with an aggressive style that marries power with precision. Her strategy is built around high-striking shuttles that open up angles, enabling her to dictate play early and remain in control even when opponents mount a response .

Against Buhrova, a world No. 40, Sharma unleashed a blend of tall serves, fierce cross- and down-the-line smashes, and sharp drop shots, overloading her higher-ranked opponent and leaving her often flat-footed . Buhrova rallied to tie the second set at 16-all, but Sharma answered emphatically, storming to victory with a decisive 5‑point burst .

This victory capped off an impressive week for the unseeded Indian, who has reliably outplayed seeded players—including world No. 23, 58, and 50—on her march to the final . In the last eight, she brushed aside Thailand’s former junior world champion Pitchamon Opatniputh (21-18, 21-16), while earlier rounds saw similar dominance .

Coach Park Tae-sang, former mentor to PV Sindhu, has expressed confidence in Sharma’s potential, likening her attacking prowess to that of India’s Olympic medalist and vowing to forge her into the “next Sindhu” . Despite her slight frame and youthful experience, her shot timing and explosive overheads have caught even Park by surprise .

In the women’s singles final, Sharma will meet American top seed Beiwen Zhang (world No. 21), who impressively navigated her side of the draw . The showdown—featuring youth versus experience, flair versus finesse—will be Sharma’s sternest test yet.

Why Sharma’s Game Is Turning Heads

Power from Precision: Her tall serves and early aggression unsettle opponents before rallies begin.

Stroke Variety: Seamlessly blends cross‑court smashes, body kills, and clever drop shots.

Game Control: Maintains intensity and dominance through full matches; barely flinched even when challenged in the second set.

What Lies Ahead

If Sharma can replicate this intensity in the final, it could mark one of the most impressive breakthroughs by an Indian teenager in recent memory. Facing a savvy and experienced campaigner in Beiwen Zhang, she’ll need to continue her fearless offense and back it with strong net work and stamina.

For now, though, the badminton world has a new teen sensation to watch. Sharma’s US Open performance is nothing short of imperious.
