Venus Williams suffered her 16th consecutive singles defeat after losing to 18-year-old Lilli Tagger in the first round of the Guangzhou Open in China on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. The 46-year-old American, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion and former world number one, was beaten 6-2, 6-2 by the Austrian teenager.

Tagger, who is 28 years younger than Williams, delivered a confident performance to advance to the next round. The result extended Williams’ difficult run in singles tennis, with the veteran still searching for her first singles victory of the 2026 season.

Lilli Tagger Beats Venus Williams in Straight Sets

Tagger established control early in the match, breaking Williams’ serve in the opening game of the first set. The Austrian maintained her advantage and secured another break to move ahead 5-2 before closing the set 6-2.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Tagger broke Williams in the opening game once again and continued to put pressure on the American’s serve. A second break gave the teenager a 5-2 lead, and she completed the victory without dropping a game in the final game of the match.

The 6-2, 6-2 result reflected Tagger’s ability to maintain her level throughout the contest. Williams could not create a break-point opportunity, while Tagger converted four of the 16 break points she earned.

Venus Williams’ Losing Streak Reaches 16 Matches

The defeat extended Williams’ losing streak in singles competition to 16 consecutive matches on the WTA Tour. Her last singles victory on the tour came in July 2025, leaving the former world number one without a win in her 13 singles appearances during the 2026 season.

Williams is currently ranked 599th in the world. Before arriving in Guangzhou, she last competed in singles at the US Open, held in August and September, where she lost in the opening round to fellow American Sofia Kenin in straight sets.

Despite the latest setback, Williams continues to compete at the professional level after a career that has spanned several generations of women’s tennis. Her appearance against Tagger brought together one of the sport’s most accomplished champions and a teenager beginning to establish herself on the WTA Tour.

Lilli Tagger Advances to Face Magda Linette

With her victory over Williams, Tagger advanced to the next round of the Guangzhou Open, where she is scheduled to face Poland’s Magda Linette. Ranked 53rd in the world at the time of the match, Tagger entered the contest as the younger player but showed composure against an opponent with extensive experience at the highest level.

The match also highlighted the generational gap in women’s tennis. Tagger was born in 2008, the same year Williams won her most recent Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon. The American has won seven Grand Slam singles titles during her career, establishing herself as one of the leading players of her era.

Venus Williams Secures a Doubles Win in Guangzhou

Although Williams’ singles campaign suffered another setback, she had a more positive result in doubles at the Guangzhou Open. The American partnered Indonesia’s Janice Tjen to record a doubles victory on Monday, October 26.

Williams and Tjen were scheduled to play again on Wednesday, giving the American another opportunity to compete in Guangzhou. While her singles losing streak remains a major talking point, the doubles event offers a separate competitive challenge as she continues her tournament campaign.

For Tagger, meanwhile, the win represents another opportunity to build momentum on the WTA Tour. Her straight-sets victory over a seven-time Grand Slam champion will draw attention to her progress as she prepares for her next match against Linette.
