India 2036 Olympics Bid: Ahmedabad Enters the Race
India’s dream of hosting the 2036 Olympics has moved into a crucial new phase. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed India among seven countries currently in discussion to host the Games, putting the country’s Olympic bid firmly on the international stage. Ahmedabad has been identified as India’s potential host city, with the proposal now moving towards a more detailed assessment by the IOC.
Seven Countries in the 2036 Olympics Race
India is competing against Germany, Hungary, Qatar, South Korea, South Africa and Turkiye for the right to host the Olympic Games 2036. All seven countries are currently in what the IOC calls “Continuous Dialogue” and have been invited to present their projects to the Future Host Commission in November.
The IOC has also set October 31, 2026, as the deadline after which no additional interested parties will be considered for the 2036 Olympics. The process is expected to become more competitive as countries develop their plans and demonstrate why they should be trusted with the world’s biggest multi-sport event.
Ahmedabad at the Heart of India’s Olympic Bid
For India Olympics 2036, Ahmedabad is the centrepiece of the proposal. India formally expressed its interest in hosting the Games in 2024, but the selection process was later paused after Kirsty Coventry became IOC president and sought a review of the existing framework.
The Indian Olympic Association, along with the Gujarat government and the Union Sports Ministry, will be involved in presenting India’s project. The country now has an opportunity to demonstrate its infrastructure, financial planning, sporting facilities and long-term vision for an Ahmedabad Olympics.
Kirsty Coventry Sets the Priority
IOC President Kirsty Coventry has made it clear that hosting the Olympics is not simply about building impressive venues. The experience of athletes will remain central to the evaluation of every Olympic bid.
“Wherever the Games take place, one thing must never change: athletes have to be at the heart of everything we do,” Coventry said. She added that delivering the best possible experience for athletes should be the starting point for every future host.
How the Olympic Host Will Be Chosen
The seven interested nations will present their projects in November, after which the IOC will conduct feasibility assessments. A shortlist is expected to emerge in March 2027, when the next stage of the selection process begins.
The bids will be examined on several factors, including venue planning, athlete experience, funding, political and public support, Games-delivery capability and long-term legacy. The final Olympic host for 2036 is expected to be selected in mid-2029.
India’s Olympic Dream Gets Real
India has never hosted the Olympic Games, making the 2036 bid a potentially historic opportunity. The country has previously staged major international sporting events, but hosting the Olympics would represent a completely different scale of ambition and responsibility.
The road to Olympics 2036 is still long, and India will face strong competition from countries with their own major sporting ambitions. For Ahmedabad and India, however, the next few years could determine whether the country finally gets the chance to welcome the world’s greatest athletes to 8its own Olympic stage.
