At 45, Fernando Alonso Aston Martin 2027 commitment has ensured that one of Formula 1’s most experienced drivers will continue racing into another season. Aston Martin confirmed on September 29 that Alonso has extended his contract, keeping him alongside Lance Stroll for 2027. The decision ends months of uncertainty over whether the Spaniard would continue in F1 beyond the 2026 campaign.
Alonso’s continuation means he will enter his 24th full-time F1 season. The two-time world champion made his debut in 2001 and currently holds the record for the most Grand Prix starts, with 440 races. He has won 32 Grands Prix and captured the world championship in 2005 and 2006 with Renault.

Alonso’s future had become one of the major questions surrounding the 2026 F1 season. His Aston Martin contract was due to expire at the end of the year, while the Spaniard had repeatedly spoken about his reservations surrounding the new-generation cars and regulations.
The 2026 regulations placed greater emphasis on electrical power and energy management, something Alonso has openly criticised. He had also been considering his future beyond driving, with the Dakar Rally and another attempt at the Indianapolis 500 among possible challenges discussed.
However, Alonso ultimately chose to continue. “Racing is my life, my passion,” he said after the announcement, adding that he still believes he has the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.

Aston Martin will retain the same driver pairing for a fifth consecutive season. Lance Stroll has also extended his contract, meaning the team will enter 2027 with one of the most experienced driver combinations on the grid. Together, Alonso and Stroll have accumulated 644 Grand Prix starts.
Since joining Aston Martin in 2023, Alonso has scored eight podium finishes, including two second-place results. The Spaniard has therefore remained an important part of the team’s development despite Aston Martin’s difficult 2026 campaign.

The decision also keeps Alonso involved in Aston Martin’s longer-term project. The team is continuing to develop its facilities and technical programme, with Adrian Newey leading its technical direction and Honda serving as its works power-unit partner.
The immediate 2026 results, however, have been difficult. After 15 rounds, Aston Martin had scored only three points, all through Alonso, and sat 10th among 11 teams. Yet the Spaniard has continued to speak positively about the organisation’s potential and his belief in its long-term plans.

The new contract guarantees that Alonso will race beyond his 46th birthday in July 2027, extending a career that has already broken the record for longevity and race starts.
Importantly, Alonso has not necessarily described 2027 as his final season. Reuters reported that he believes he could continue beyond next year, while also stressing that motivation, enjoyment and family balance will influence his future decisions.
For now, though, the message is clear: Fernando Alonso is not finished with Formula 1 yet.
