Seema Kumari Asian Games 2026: From Chamba Bronze to 5000m Challenge
Seema Kumari Asian Games 2026 Journey Continues
Seema Kumari Asian Games 2026 story has already become one of Indian athletics’ most memorable chapters at Aichi-Nagoya. The 25-year-old from Reta village in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district won bronze in the women’s 10,000m, clocking 32:50.05. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won gold in 32:39.18, while Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka took silver in 32:41.54. Seema’s podium ended India’s 16-year wait for a women’s 10,000m Asian Games medal.

Seema’s bronze was not simply another addition to India’s medal tally. She became only the third Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in the 10,000m, following Preeja Sreedharan and Kavita Raut, who won gold and silver respectively at the 2010 Asian Games.
The race itself was tactical, with the athletes focusing heavily on the medal battle rather than simply chasing fast times. Seema remained in contention before dropping back during the middle stages, but she produced a strong finish to secure third place. Her performance also came despite a personal best of 32:02.43 entering the Games.
Seema Kumari 5000m Race Brings Another Opportunity
Seema’s Asian Games campaign is not over. She is scheduled to compete in the women’s 5000m on September 28, giving her another opportunity to challenge for the podium.
The runner has already made her ambition clear after the 10,000m bronze.
“I will try my best to change the colour of my medal,” Seema said after her historic performance.
The 5000m field will present another demanding challenge, but Seema enters the race with the confidence of an Asian Games medallist and the experience of a major championship final behind her.
Seema Kumari’s Journey From Chamba to Nagoya
Seema’s success carries an equally significant story away from the track. She lost her father when she was 12, while her family depended largely on farming and cattle rearing. In her early running days, she did not even have proper shoes. Her talent was first noticed at school competitions before she progressed through district and state-level athletics.
A major turning point came in 2015, when she joined the Sports Authority of India hostel in Dharamsala. Professional coaching and better facilities helped her progress, and she won the junior national 10,000m title that year. She later became part of the Khelo India programme and continued developing as a distance runner.
Seema Kumari Asian Games 2026 Medal Fuels Bigger Dreams
Seema has also revealed that she did not tell her elderly mother about her Asian Games trip because she did not want to make her anxious. Her family had supported her journey through difficult circumstances, making the Nagoya bronze particularly meaningful.
Her preparation for the Games included training under coach Scott Simmons in the United States alongside other elite athletes. Seema credited that environment with helping her develop both performance and mental strength.
The 10,000m bronze has already changed the sporting story of Chamba. Now, on September 28, Seema gets another chance to add to it in the 5000m.
